Trevor Stiles has loved being a scout since his Webelo days so it is not surprising that fulfilling the many requirements of becoming an Eagle Scout was on his bucket list.
This soft spoken young man over six feet tall is a member of a Greenwich troop and was eager to acknowledge their members, local business contributors (Curtis Lumber, Peckham Industries and Red Bark Mulch from Fort Edward) and the guidance of many people including his dad (Chris Stiles) during our recent interview.
One of the formidable prerequisites to this level of Scouting is the completion of a community project. Trevor’s project was to transform the very eroded Warren County canoe access site on the Schroon River at Exit 24 on the way to Ridin-Hy Ranch into a usable launch for all ages. However, this writer learned that it’s not just about doing the work, Trevor would act like a General Contractor; managing, planning and leading the project’s many phases beginning with the Scout Council’s paperwork in addition to the APA’s lengthy application. The DEC was instrumental in assisting him with overcoming any potential hurdles. The finished compilation of schematic diagrams and multiple pages of detailed descriptions was “impressive and daunting”.
This 17 year old currently attends Myers Center in Saratoga and will graduate from North Warren Central School in June. His current life goal is to obtain all HVAC licenses. Recently, Trevor was notified that he had won the William Hornaday Medal for Conservation. This medal has only been awarded 1,100 times since 1914 making him 1 in 15,000 Scouts to receive this honor.
When asked “If and how this honor and project had affected him?” Trevor softly replied with a smile “I feel IMPROVED”. Yes, the perfect response as there is no doubt that this feeling of betterment will continue to be part of his life as well as those around him. His Eagle Scout ceremony will take place in July at the Elk’s Lodge 2223 in Greenwich as they are the chartering organization for Troop 27.
Spotlight will soon catch up with Jacob Smit whose Eagle Scout ceremony is this weekend. Once again North Warren students exemplify their desire for self improvement while also giving to their community.
