Ferguson, 17, is a member of Troop 30 and his service project was to organize an Autism Awareness Fair at North Warren Central School during Autism awareness month in April 2015. In total, this young man spent in excess of four hundred hours raising money, seeking presenters and organizing this four hour event.
Due to Jacob's leadership and help received from members of his troop, informational and “fun” booths were set up in the school’s gymnasium for the attendees . Jacob was very pleased that over one hundred people spent part of their Sunday afternoon learning about Autism. He was especially pleased that members from the Warren County EMS and Chestertown Fire Department also attended thereby increasing their understanding of this disorder.
Since Jacob strongly feels that “AWARENESS equals the Playing Field” it is not surprising that highlights of that day included positive feedback from many people including Autistic families. Jacob was personally pleased when a young boy maybe 10 or 11 years of age said to him “that he was happy that somebody was trying to make Autism understandable”. This writer and Jacob both smiled with satisfaction when this moment was shared in our interview.
On a personal note, Jacob is also extremely grateful to his Mom for all of her love and support. Jacob Ferguson, another example of the young people who make North Warren and our communities stronger and better through their courage and example.
